Isle of Miles Mobile Gaming Assets

Project Overview

Z Axis Labs is a mobile gaming company with a focus on health and life goals. I partnered with the company to work on their game Isle of Miles and create a set of in game assets. By connecting with an Apple Watch, iPhone or Fitbit the game keeps track of the distance you walk or run. This data is compiled and converted to in game currency which you can trade for enticing assets.  

Goals

The goal was to illustrate and animate a set of icons that would live on the Isle of Miles platform. The assets give users incentive to accumulate more in game currency through physical activity or by purchasing the assets directly. The assets would also add more visual appeal to the game.

My Role

My role was to illustrate and animate the set of assets. The new assets would need to work with already existing assets in the game and have the ability to be easily implemented into the mobile platform. 

Inspiration

Initial research spanned from unique illustration styles to natural occurrences. This meant looking at everything from current mobile games to imagery of nature. Combining my own findings with what the client provided I could move into initial sketches.

Sketches

I created initial sketches of each asset before making digital renditions. This allowed for quick client approval and feedback when multiple directions were possible.

Illustrations

I used Adobe Illustrator to create all of the illustrations. The set is a mix of low-poly and geometric assets that set perfectly with the already existing assets in the game. Most of the assets are one tile in size to allow for endless variation on each island. The larger mountain asset pictured below measures four tiles by four tiles. 

Animation

In addition to the illustrations I created an animated fountain that users can purchase in the app. I used Photoshop and After Effects to generate the .PNG sequence. 

Results

The app has received positive comments from user reviews and continues to grow in popularity. The assets I designed are a popular choice among Isle of Miles users.
